# Developer API & MCP Gateway

Connect custom scripts, local tools, and autonomous AI systems securely using the Model Context Protocol.

## Creating Access Tokens

1. Navigate to **Settings -> Developer Settings**.
2. Click **Generate Token**.
3. Configure the token scope (e.g. read-only, vault-specific, or full-write).

## Model Context Protocol (MCP)

Basalt Notes features a native **Model Context Protocol (MCP)** server.
- Connect your external LLM clients (like Anthropic Claude Desktop or custom agents) to your Basalt vault.
- The MCP gateway allows external tools to search notes, fetch content, and update backlinks, keeping markdown files as the source of truth.
