# Welcome to Basalt Notes

Today, we are thrilled to introduce **Basalt Notes**, a next-generation local-first knowledge workspace designed for speed, privacy, and full user data ownership.

Basalt Notes was born out of a simple observation: the tools we use to think should belong entirely to us, yet they shouldn't force us to compromise on convenience, performance, or modern capabilities like cloud sync, real-time collaboration, and smart search.

## The Trade-off of Modern Note-Taking

Until now, anyone looking for a digital notebook faced a compromise:
1. **Cloud-First Platforms:** Rich in features, collaborative, and available anywhere—but you pay with your privacy, risk data lock-in, and depend entirely on proprietary servers.
2. **Local-First Tools:** Give you complete ownership of your plain-text files—but require complex sync configurations, lack native browser access, and make on-device intelligence difficult to set up out of the box.

Basalt Notes bridges this gap. By utilizing a hybrid storage architecture, it offers the file durability of plain text, the speed of local hardware, and the convenience of a modern collaborative web application.

## Core Pillars of Basalt Notes

### 1. Hard-Disk Speed inside the Browser
At the heart of Basalt Notes is a browser-native local cache. By reading and writing files directly to your device's high-speed sandboxed cache, we achieve near-instantaneous load times. Your notes open, search, and save instantly, even in vaults containing tens of thousands of files.

### 2. Private, Local-First Sync
Your data is yours. Basalt Notes does not store your notes on our servers. Instead, a background sync engine streams changes directly from your local browser cache to your personal cloud storage (such as Google Drive or Dropbox). If you are offline, you can continue working without interruption; changes sync automatically when you reconnect.

### 3. Connected Thinking and Interactive Graphs
Ideas are rarely linear. Basalt Notes supports automatic WikiLinks, backlinks, and outgoing link tracking. An interactive 2D force-directed knowledge graph lets you visualize connections, map relationships, and explore how your ideas evolve over time.

### 4. Local-First Private Intelligence
We believe intelligent tools should assist your thinking without taking control of your knowledge. Basalt prefers private processing on your device for search, document recognition, transcription, writing assistance, and source-grounded answers. People who want more advanced capabilities can explicitly connect their own provider while keeping local intelligence as the free default.

### 5. Structured "Quarries" and Task Management
Markdown shouldn't limit you to static documents. With properties and "Quarries," you can query your notes to generate dynamic tables, Kanban boards, and checklists from raw Markdown files. Tasks can be embedded anywhere within your vault and tracked in a unified planner and calendar.

### 6. Developer and Agent Integrations
Basalt Notes is built for the automated age. It features secure developer interfaces, allowing approved local automation tools and scripts to interact with your knowledge vault securely while preserving raw Markdown as the absolute source of truth.

## What's Next?

We are currently launching Phase 1 of Basalt Notes, focusing on core editor performance, initial cloud synchronization, and local knowledge graphs. Over the coming weeks, we will expand our templates engine, roll out early access to our multiplayer collaboration features, and refine our local AI capabilities.

We invite you to start building your vault today and take back ownership of your digital mind.
